Apple Pie Rolls

I'm sure I'm not the only person who has ever looked at egg roll wrappers and wondered how they could be used for other things.

When you take a bite into our Apple Pie Egg Rolls you will love this dessert recipe and how easy it is to make with egg roll wrappers. This favorite fall dessert tastes like mini apple pies.

Why This Recipe

The ease. Wrapping up your homemade pie filling in an egg roll wrapper is incredibly easy. Far easier than messing with pie dough!

The size. Not only are apple pie egg rolls easy to make, they are also the perfect size! Just a few bites of pie in each roll is perfect for portion control and handy to grab on your way out the door or send with your loved ones in a lunch box.

The flavor. This easy apple pie egg rolls recipe makes a comfort food like no other and this recipe delivers that well-known comforting flavor. It is a delicious dessert.

Ingredients for Apple Pie Egg Rolls

  • Granny Smith Apples. You can use other apples as well, just make sure you pick an apple suited for baking. Use fresh apples for best results.
  • Egg Roll Wrappers. You can find these at your local supermarket or an Asian supermarket near you. You can also order them in advance online.
  • Unsalted Butter. No need to elevate the salt in the recipe.
  • Brown Sugar. Light or dark brown sugar will both work.
  • Granulated Sugar. White sugar adds balance to the sweetness profile as too much brown sugar gets overwhelming.
  • Cinnamon. Ground from the inner bark of a tree. Several varieties can be purchased.
  • Nutmeg. This spice is ground from the seed of a specific evergreen tree. You can buy ground nutmeg or buy a piece of nutmeg and grate it yourself.
  • Allspice. Made from specific ground berries and not from a mix of several different spices as the name might imply.
  • Salt. For flavor enhancement.
  • Lemon juice. The juice of one lemon adds a little tartness and also protects the color of the apples from getting too dark.
  • Cornstarch. Used for thickening the sauce that forms.
  • Water.
  • Oil. Vegetable oil, canola oil, or coconut oil for frying in a skillet.

How to Make Apple Pie Rolls

You will find this recipe to be incredibly simple. Just mix up the apple pie filling, and then wrap a little in each egg roll wrapper. Finish them off in a skillet to a tasty golden brown. Here's what you need to purchase to get started.

  1. Melt butter in a pan.
  2. Core and dice your apples.
  3. For softer apples, cook in butter before adding sugar.
  4. Add cinnamon sugar and spices to pan and cook with chopped apples over medium heat. Bring to a boil.
  5. Mix cornstarch and water together and add to the mixture.
  6. It will begin to thicken. Once it reaches a consistency where it coats the back of the spoon, remove from pan and let cool to room temperature.
  7. Once cooled, add a spoonful of filling to the center of the wrapper and roll tightly.
  8. Heat oil and place egg rolls in the pan. Fry until golden brown on all sides.
  9. Drain on paper towels or parchment paper.
  10. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with leftover filling syrup or caramel sauce.

FAQ

How do I keep leftover apple pie egg rolls?

Store your leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat each one individually in the microwave to enjoy hot.

Can I freeze apple pie egg rolls?

Yes. Freeze these individually on a sheet pan and then transfer them to an airtight container or freezer-quality zipper bag once they are frozen solid. This way you can grab one or two at a time to thaw and enjoy.

How do I reheat apple pie egg rolls?

Use a microwave to reheat these from frozen or chilled. Try reheating in thirty second intervals until you reach your desired temperature. Remember that microwaves can create pockets of intense heat internally so use caution.

Tips for Best Results

Since you will only be using a spoonful of pie filling in each wrapper, make sure to dice your apples small so that you get plenty of apple flavor in each bite.

These are the perfect dessert as is, but you can step them up a notch. Serve apple pie egg rolls with caramel syrup, Vanilla ice cream, homemade whipped cream or Cool Whip®, or a little bit of powdered sugar glaze.
