Tips for best results

  • Serve the warm donuts with a cold glass of milk or a hot cup of coffee.
  • Store leftover doughnut holes in an airtight container after letting them cool to room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • When frying, drip tiny drops of batter into the oil (the batter will expand in the oil).
  • This will yield a very large amount of small donut holes. It’s best to let them dry in a single layer to help avoid an oily aftertaste in the ones on the bottom.
  • Let them dry completely before tossing in cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar.

Substitutions and variations

  • Use wheat flour in place of all-purpose flour for a healthier option
  • Try different variations of toppings, such as chocolate sugar, powdered sugar, or even a glaze
  • For a non-fried version, make baked donut holes in a donut hole pan or mini muffin tin coated with nonstick oil spray
  • Add some diced apples and some fall spices to the batter to make apple cider donuts.
  • For a shortcut, use biscuit dough from a store-bought can of biscuits.
