Ingredients for tangy buffalo sauce

  • Hot sauce – Use your favorite brand! I like Frank’s hot sauce, but you can use a different brand.
  • Unsalted butter – Make certain it’s unsalted, as there is already quite a bit of salt in hot sauce.
  • Garlic powder – Don’t confuse with garlic salt.
  • Paprika – for a little kick
  • Worcestershire sauce – Adds a ton of flavor.
  • Cayenne – Optional but a fast and easy way to add some heat.

How to Make Buffalo Sauce

Tips for the Best Results

  • Cool your butter: Be sure to let the melted butter cool to room temperature before mixing it with the hot sauce to prevent separation.
  • Whisk thoroughly: Take the time to whisk your ingredients together until smooth to create a uniform, rich sauce.
  • Make it spicier: Add more cayenne pepper if you like extra heat—this recipe is easy to adjust to your personal spice level.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. The flavors may intensify over time, making your next batch of wings even more delicious. Just stir before reusing.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Butter alternatives: Swap the unsalted butter for margarine or a butter substitute if you’re looking for a dairy-free option.
  • Hot sauce: Use any flavorful hot sauce, from a standard spicy sauce to more intense varieties like chili pepper-infused options.
  • Add vinegar: A splash of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar will add an extra tangy note to your buffalo sauce.
  • Dipping sauce: This buffalo sauce pairs perfectly with sour cream for a cool contrast, or add it to your favorite creamy dressing for an extra zesty dip.
  • Soy sauce: In a pinch, soy sauce can be substituted for Worcestershire sauce.
  • Extra spicy: To raise the spice level, add a little more hot sauce to the mixture.
