This blueberry crisp dessert, or as some call it, blueberry crumble, is one of our favorite desserts at family get-togethers. You can also make this ahead of time.

Versatility is so helpful in the kitchen! Change up the fruit in this easy summer dessert by adding peaches or apples to the base.

Blueberry Crisp 6 ingredients

This easy blueberry crisp recipe only has a handful of ingredients.

Blueberries – Use fresh, ripe, plump blueberries for this recipe. You can use frozen if that is all that is available. Pick sweet blueberries that are a deep indigo color.

Flour –  I use all-purpose flour.

Butter  -You want to use real butter if possible, but you can also use margarine if that is what you have on hand. I used unsalted butter for this recipe. There is no need for cold butter, room temperature is best for this delicious dessert.

Sugar – I use white sugar

Substitutions & Variations

  • Different Fruits – Replace the 3 cups of blueberries with blackberries, cherries or a combination.
  • Blueberry Pie Filling– use gluten free buns instead of white bread buns to make this gluten free
  • Cherry Blueberry Crisp – Substitute pitted cherries for half of the blueberries for this fun combination variation.

How to Make Blueberry Crisp

Step 1 – In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and egg.

Step 2 – Mix until crumbly.

Step 3 – Place fresh berries in prepared pan and cover the top of the blueberries with the crumble mixture.

Step 4 – Pour melted butter on crumb topping.

Step 5 – Bake as directed.

Timesaving and Pro Tips

You can make the topping mixture ahead of time and keep it in a baggie or sealed container until ready to make.

Wash the blueberries ahead of time so they are ready when you are.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups blueberries
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 6 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  • Lightly grease a square baking pan
  • Pour blueberries in greased pan
  • Sprinkle lemon juice over berries
  • In a medium bowl, mix together flour, sugar, and egg until crumbly.
  • Cover the blueberries with the crumb batter.
  • Pour melted butter on the crumb mixture.
  • Bake in the oven 35 -38 minutes until topping is light brown and blueberries are bubbling.

    I’m experimenting at home and made this non-oatmeal topped crisp recipe. It tastes like a pie/cookie/muffin all in one. Yum. I need to double up on the top crust. There’s not enough to contain the blueberry juices. Otherwise, it’s perfect. 🤤
