Why You Will Love This Recipe

Easy recipe. This Italian sandwich recipe is made with simple ingredients from your grocery store.

Flavorful. This is like Italian charcuterie topped with a delicious olive spread in a single sandwich. The spread is a tangy, salty mix of chopped olives, peppers, and herbs with Italian meats. The best part is it’s a flavor burst for your taste buds!

Traditional Recipe. This is a traditional muffuletta sandwich that is often served during Mardi Gras in New Orleans. This Muffaletta recipe is made with loaf of Italian bread and this makes about 10 – 12 muffuletta sandwiches.

Muffalettas! Beads! Happy times!

Mardi Gras is coming soon, and although I do not need an excuse for a party, this is as good as any.  Mardi Gras or “Fat Tuesday”, is the prelude to Lent, the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter.

Key Ingredients

  • bread – Authentic muffaletta bread is found in New Orleans Central Grocery, where the muffaletta sandwich was supposedly invented, but you can use Italian loaf bread or another sturdy bread.
  • Olives: This is the heart and soul of the muffaletta. I used Kalamata olives, chopped green olives and black olives for a nice homemade olive salad tapanade. Check out your grocery store olive bar for a selection,
  • Salami: Genoa salami is a classic choice, with its bold peppery flavor. I used cotto salami and hard salami
  • Herbs – Oregano and Basil
  • Olive Oil

In New Orleans, there are lots of parties and parades.  The traditional colors of Mardi Gras are Purple, Yellow and Green representing justice, power, and faith, respectively.

Masks and beads are fun party accessories and the festivities would not be complete without Zydeco Music. We incorporated the colors into our server ware.

Here is a recipe for tasty Muffalettas –  sandwiches I made for the party.

Step 1 – Make the Olive Mixture

Place some olive dressing on both sides of the bread

Then layer slices of salami, mozzarella cheese, salami and provolone cheese on the sandwich like an Italian sub. You can switch up the italian cold cuts if you like.

I have made these sandwiches on both Ciabatta and French bread and they both come out great.

Layer sandwich

Put top of bread on sandwich and cut into serving size sandwiches.   Makes about 1 dozen sandwiches.

Timesaving Tips and Helpful Hints

  • You can Prepare the olive salad ahead of time and even use it the next day. The olive salad is the heart of the muffaletta, so take your time with it
  • Feel free to experiment with other cured meats and cheeses based on your preferences.
  • Wrap and refrigerate. Tightly wrap the sandwich in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, ideally overnight. This allows the bread to soften and absorb the olive salad’s juices, resulting in a perfectly balanced and flavorful bite.

It is all in the delicious filling that is full of flavor.
