These festive Mardi gras cupcakes are. a great way to celebrate mardi gras season.
I love the swirling of three frosting colors.
Mardi Gras Cupcakes Ingredients:
Cake Mix– Use a vanilla or white cake mix
Eggs, Oil Water– per cake mix package directions. I always use large eggs at room temperature for best results.
Food Coloring
Sprinkles – You will want to use the traditional colors purple, green, and gold--which represent justice, faith, and power. You can also use a festive pre-made mix.
Buttercream Frosting - I use this easy buttercream frosting recipe.
Equipment and Kitchen. Tools
- large mixing bowl
- cupcake pan or muffin tins
- cupcake liners
- 3 small bowls (a separate bowl for each color)
- wire rack
- piping bag and 1 mti p
How to Make a Mardi Gras Cupcakes
The full recipe is below, but the basic steps are:

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees f.
- Place paper liners in muffin cups.
- Add cake mix, vanilla, eggs, oil and water to mixing bowl.
- Mix the according to package instructions with a hand or stand mixer over medium speed.
- Separate the blended cupcake batter into three bowls
- Add 1-2 drops of food color per bowl and mix until well incorporated to tint each a different color.
- Add a little of each batter to the cupcake papers. (about one teaspoon of each color to the liners until ¾ full).
- Bake cupcakes for 15-18 min
Let cool. - Frost with vanilla buttercream frosting.
when you color the frosting, keep each color in its own piping bag.
Then put the three together in a separate piping bag with the star tip.

Pro Tips and Timesaver Shortcuts
- Make the frosting the day before and store in the refrigerator. Bring to room temperature before frosting cupcakes.
- Tinting the batter on these fun cupcakes makes for a surprise when people bit into then.
- If you are pressed for time, you can just make the batter tri-color and top these with white frosting. Then add purple, yellow and green sprinkles.

- You can substitute a cream cheese frosting for the buttercream for a festive look.

- Make your favorite vanilla frosting.
- Dye it the same 3 colors as the batter.
- Place each color in a 12 inch piping bag.
- Drop a 1M tip into a 16 inch piping bag.
