Tips for the Best Results
- Use Warm Water: Ensure your water is warm, but not too hot, to activate the yeast properly.
- Let the Dough Rise: Allow the dough to rise in a warm place covered with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap for at least an hour for the best texture.
- Boil Before Baking: Don’t skip the boiling water bath—it’s essential for achieving that traditional chewy texture and shiny crust.
- Egg Wash for Shine: Brushing the bagels with an egg wash before baking gives them a beautiful golden brown finish.
- Room Temperature Ingredients: Bring your ingredients to room temperature before starting to ensure a smoother dough and better rise.
Substitutions and Variations
- Sweet Bagels: For a sweeter take, skip the everything bagel seasoning and add cinnamon sugar to the dough before baking.
- Flour Options: If you prefer a healthier option, substitute some of the bread flour with whole wheat flour. You can also experiment with self-rising flour for a slightly different texture.
- Seasoning Mix: Don’t have everything bagel seasoning? Create your own blend with equal parts of garlic flakes, onion flakes, poppy seeds, white sesame seeds, and coarse salt.
