This easy Valentine's Craft idea is not only fun to make, you can also fill it with fun things like candies, gift cards or cookies! Put a smile on someone's face with this fun and easy DIY craft idea.

Hello Islanders!
With Valentine's day coming soon, I wanted to share a fun (and frugal) gift idea using items from the dollar store. I made this project at the CHA show last week and I wanted to share it because it is simple, frugal, and quick. My kind of craft!
This makes a fun activity for kids and adults alike. Whether it is a Valentine's day party or a spring tea, this activity is always a fun one. Just be sure that an adult is able to help with the curing process.
Valentine's Craft Idea - Painted Cup
Supplies & Equipment Needed
- Ceramic mug in a white or light color
- Paint Markers - It is very important to use Waterproof Paint markers for this project.
- Oven

Choosing your Design
Using the markers, you can create a design on your mug. I decided to keep it super simple and draw hearts all over the mug. You can also draw a combination of hearts and something else, like flowers or butterflies. You don't need to be super artistic to decorate the cup.
I would keep the design at least ½" from the edge of the cup. You can even add a few decorative hearts or curves on the handle.
Then just start drawing on the cup. You can use a couple of colors too. Be careful not to smear the cup while you are designing it. It is best to start on one side of the handle and work your way around until you reach the other side.

Once you have finished, let the ink dry a bit.
Then seal your project in a 300 oven for 30 minutes. This is important to set the paint on your Valentine's mug.

They are fun to make and do not require you to be a great artist (thank goodness!) If you want, you can make some homemade hot chocolate mix and include a little baggie of it or a pack of instant coffee.

Dollar store here I come!!! (Oh, where can I get those markers?)
Raquel
Yes LuAnn - dollar stores for the cups and JoAnn's or Michael's for the markers 🙂
Tamara
It's a GREAT gift! And you make such neat hearts. I don't have as much faith in my heart-drawing ability.
Raquel
Thank you Tamara! It's about the only thing I can draw!
Akaleistar
You draw such pretty hearts!

How neat! One year, when I was a public school teacher, one of my parents gave me a cup that was decorated with a marker. It was so cute! I love this one too!
Raquel
Thank you Sharon! Yes, these make great teacher gifts too. 🙂
Emily
Wait, this is awesome, and I love the hearts, but is it dishwasher safe? If so, I'm running out to buy some! 🙂
Raquel
Yes, top shelf recommended, but you have to cure it first. 30 minutes in a 300° oven.

I have been searching for a pen that won't disappear with dishwashing or rubbing. Have you washed this mug a few times now and how is it holding up? If it has proven durable, you have made my day!!
Raquel
Yes, I have handwashed this mug and it is still good. I use a sponge as opposed to a brush, but may try it just to see if it affects it.
Dee
These are so cute! I've made decorated plates before but haven't tried mugs. Have a great day! Dee 🙂
Raquel
Thanks Dee. I love these markers and can't wait to try them on other dishes.
