Why This Recipe

Hot Buttered Rum Coffee is the perfect warm drink at the end of a long winter day with time spent outside in the cold, even if it's just from the car to the door. Warm yourself up from the inside out! This is better than a hot shower when you just can't get warm.

Buttered Rum is the ultimate comfort drink with just the right amount of spices, sweetness, and buttery goodness mixed with just the right amount of alcohol.

Hot Buttered Rum Coffee Recipe

How to Make Hot Buttered Rum Coffee

You can make two servings of this delicious hot buttered rum cocktail in just about three minutes. First, you melt the butter. Then you add the spices. Next, you mix the drink = hot water, rum, and the batter. Finally, you top it with whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon for effect. Delicious and FAST.

Ingredients for Hot Buttered Rum Coffee

Batter Mix Ingredients

Brown Sugar. Dark or light brown sugar will both work. Dark has a more intense flavor.

Unsalted Butter. I don't recommend using the salted kind for mixing drinks.

Cinnamon. Ground from the inner bark of specific trees, I do recommend choosing high-quality cinnamon for cocktail mixing.

Ground Nutmeg. Freshly ground is amazing, but if you have jars in your pantry just make sure it is fresh.

Ground Cloves. A little goes a long way! Don't be tempted to estimate with cloves.

Vanilla Extract. Do not use imitation vanilla in this cocktail.

Cocktail Ingredients

Hot Water or coffee. Microwave your water or use a coffee machine to get it good and hot.

Batter Mixture. All the yummy goodness of the spices and butter go into the cocktail mix.

Dark Rum. Make sure you get the right kind for the best results. Try blackstrap rum.

Whipped Topping. For garnish. You can use whipped cream or make your own whipping cream for extra pizazz.

Cinnamon. For garnish.

Step-By-Step Instructions

  1. Place brown sugar and butter in a microwavable pyrex bowl.
  2. Microwave for 1 minute.
  3. Whisk in spices and vanilla.
  4. To make the cocktail add two tablespoons of the batter with ⅔ cup hot water or coffee.
  5. Stir and add in rum. Stir again.
  6. Top with whipped topping and cinnamon.

FAQ

How many calories are in a hot buttered rum drink?

One eight-ounce serving could be as much as 300 calories. We did not do exact calculations for this recipe because that is not the point.

Can I make a hot buttered rum coffee vegan or dairy-free?

Yes. Just use your favorite butter substitute and you will still get amazing results.

I only need one serving. Can I keep the hot buttered rum coffee for another night?

Yes. Keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat it in a saucepan on low heat until warm. Tread carefully or you will cook off all the alcohol.

Is hot buttered rum a hot toddy?

The concept is exactly the same, but most people think of whiskey when they think of a hot toddy.

Can I make a non-alcoholic version of hot buttered rum?

Yes. Instead of rum, reduce the brown sugar and add heavy cream and butterscotch syrup. You can also purchase non-alcoholic rum if preferred.
