Ingredients for Flag Cupcakes

You only need a handful of ingredients to make these adorable Flag Cupcakes
- Chocolate cake mix – plus ingredients from the box directions (water, oil, eggs)
- Unsalted butter
- Vanilla extract – I like to use good quality extracts to get the best flavor
- Powdered sugar – also known as confectioners’ sugar
- Red and Blue gel food coloring
Equipment Needed To Make
- Large mixing bowl
- Cooling rack
- Cupcake pan
- Optional: Pastry bag and #32 and #13 tips
Substitutions & Alterations
- You can sub vanilla, lemon, or red velvet cake mix for a fun color surprise inside! Red velvet adds an extra patriotic pop.
- Swap traditional buttercream with whipped cream, Cream Cheese Frosting, or Marshmallow Fluff for a lighter twist.
- You can use different food colorings to create your heritage flag as well!
- Add crushed candy pieces, candy sugar, chopped nuts, or dried fruit to the tops of the cupcakes

Step 2 – Fill lined baking cups and bake cupcakes.

Step 3 – Allow the cupcakes to cool completely while you prepare the frosting.

Step 4 – Separate the frosting and tint 1/3 red and 1/3 blue.

Step 5 – Start in left corner of cupcake and use star tip to cover 1/4 of the cupcake with blue icing.

Step 6 – Use smaller tip with white icing in between the blue frosting stars.

Step 7 – Use star tip to alternate red and blue icing stripes.

Time Saving Tips & Tricks
- Use a piping bag (or zip-top bag with a snipped corner) for neater flag lines and cleaner decorating.
- Pro Tip – outline where you want the stripes to go with one dab of icing for each stripe before you add the rest of the frosting.
- Add gel coloring to any canned white frosting to save time
- Chill cupcakes briefly before decorating to keep the frosting firm and mess-free
- This can be a fun party activity! Set up a “decorate-your-own cupcake” station with additional toppings and let everyone create their own flag design.
