See my tips for a farmers market shopping list. Farmers markets are a great place to save on your grocery bill.
Are you a farmers market fan like I am? I love perusing farmers markets near my work because the product is fresh and I like supporting my local farmers. I also love to visit farmers markets when I travel. They are a great source of regional food items and a great way to meet locals. Some of these photos are from my travels in Europe.
I wanted to share my farmers market shopping list tips with you to help you focus on what you need so that you can save time and money when you visit one.
First, develop a meal plan for the week. Every Friday we share a new meal plan to help you with meal ideas. Our free printable meal planning printables can help you formulate your menus. Consider what is currently in season when developing your meal plan. Depending on where you live, this will vary. You will save more money when items are in season.
Make a list of fresh produce and items you need. We have printable produce guides to help you. Farmers markets are great sources of items such as fruits, vegetables, cheese, eggs, honey, olive oils, spices, artisan bread, flowers, nuts, popcorn, bakery goods and meat. Some farmers markets have seafood, as well.
Have an idea of what is on sale in your supermarket that week and make a note on your list so you know if the item at the farmers' market is a good price. You may consider spending a few more cents to support your local businesses, but know what your limit will be.
Compare vendors produce. Walk around the market before you purchase the items offered. Talk to the vendors and ask questions. You may even want to bargain if you are buying in bulk.
Have fun. Try samples when available and ask the vendors about their business. I have discovered lots of great items and people this way. The farmers market experience can not only save you money but inspire you to make new recipes.
Don't forget to check the hours of your local market. You will find the best selection in the morning, but the best deals at the end of the day. To find out some of the Farmers Markets near you, check out Local Harvest.
I hope you enjoyed these farmers market shopping list tips. Do you shop at farmers markets?
Tamara
Yes, we do! I love your tips for making the most of it. I find it bursting these days, and then you start getting the fall harvests. We even have a winter market indoors. I could never live anywhere without this.
Raquel
I bet you have some wonderful produce on your coast Tamara! I would love to see one of those winter markets someday!
