- Oil – Swap with melted butter or refined coconut oil for a slightly different flavor.
- Cocoa Powder
- Buttermilk – you can also use regular or DF milk and add a little vinegar
- Nutella
- Brown Sugar – light or dark will work

Equipment Needed To Make
- Muffin pan
- Paper liners or nonstick spray
- Mixing bowls
- Whisk and spoon
- Toothpick (to check doneness and to swirl Nutella)
Substitutions & Alterations
- Milk: You can also use almond or oat milk. I like to use a non-flavored, “creamy” or “barista-style” plant milk because they’re a little thicker and closer to whole milk. Add one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar to the recipe amount and let sit for 5 minutes to achieve a “vegan buttermilk”.
- Nutella: Substitute with any chocolate-hazelnut spread or even peanut butter with a drizzle of chocolate syrup.
- There are also a variety of dairy free Nutella copycats available from companies like Good Good and Chosen Foods. Ferrero, Nutella’s parent company, has also started making a DF Nutella, but currently it is only available in Europe.
- For a nut-free version, try replacing the Nutella with a nut-free version, some Sun Butter, or Biscoff spread.
