Tips for the best results

  • Spread the apple mixture evenly in the baking dish, so there are no dry spots on the top of the cake mix.
  • Pour melted butter carefully over the top of the cake mix to help it bake into a golden brown crumb topping.
  • Serve warm with a big scoop of ice cream, caramel bits, or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an extra sweet treat.
  • Store leftover apple dump cake in an airtight container wrapped with plastic wrap. Reheat in the oven or microwave, or eat cold.

Substitutions and variations

  • Swap yellow cake mix for spice cake mix or white cake mix.
  • Add a sprinkle of brown sugar or a cinnamon mixture over the top for more sweetness.
  • Make a caramel apple dump cake recipe by adding a drizzle of caramel sauce on top of the pie filling.
  • Replace the apple filling with cherry pie filling for a cherry dump cake, or you can make peach dump cake, blueberry dump cake, or even pumpkin dump cake for a variety of tasty treats.
  • Use pats of butter instead of melted butter across the top of the cake mixture if you like a chunkier, crumbly top.

Store it in an airtight container in the fridge. It will stay fresh for a few days and can be reheated easily.

Can I use other cake mixes?
