Ingredients for New Years Pretzels
- Ghiradelli's White Chocolate Melting Wafers. You can use any white chocolate for melting, but this is a fabulous choice!
- Black Candy Melts. We used the ones from Sweet Tooth Fairy, but you can use whatever you find at your local craft store or mega-mart store.
- Snyder's Pretzel Rods. Long and large pretzel rods from any brand will work.
- Gold and Silver Star Sprinkles. Check out the cake decorating section of your local craft store from some beautiful choices!
- Edible Gold Glitter.
How to Make New Years Pretzels
Melt the white chocolate melting wafers as directed on the bag.
Cover the end of the pretzel with white chocolate by scooping some over with a spoon and rolling the pretzel or dipping each pretzel in the chocolate and rolling it. Lightly tap the side of pretzel to get the excess chocolate off. Place on parchment paper.
Quickly add gold and silver star sprinkles and gold dust over three pretzels each.
Melt the black candy melts as directed. Drizzle over three more pretzels. Allow all of the pretzels to harden before stacking them on a serving tray.
Substitutions and Variations
Change these up easily for any occasion or celebration just by changing the sprinkles and the candy melt colors.
Use gluten-free pretzel rods for a quick and easy allergen-friendly treat.
Use small pretzels with the same chocolate, candy melts and sprinkles for a similar treat.
Tips for Best Results
Do not overheat the chocolate or candy melts. I like to use the microwave, but chocolate melting wafers will hold their shape even once they melt. For best results, check and stir the candy every ten to twenty seconds so that the chocolate doesn't scorch and clump together.
If your chocolate is melted carefully and still clumps, check the expiration date. White chocolate bought last year will not work for this year as it does go bad after expiration.
Work with a partner to make sure you get all of the pretzels dipped and all the sprinkles added before the chocolate starts to harden. This is a great job for teens and tweens in the kitchen!
You cannot add liquid food coloring or extracts to white chocolate. It will cause the chocolate or candy melts to sieze. It is best to buy the color of candy melts you want, or buy specialty food colorings and oil-based flavoring.
Recipe Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to melt chocolate?
A microwave, is simple and easy as long as you follow these steps. Place the candies in a microwave bowl. Heat them in the microwave for thirty seconds. Remove the bowl and stir. Return them to the microwave and heat for twenty seconds. Remove the bowl and stir. Continue heating and stirring in ten to twenty second intervals until the chocolate smooths out when stirred. Do not overheat the chocolate.
If you have a double boiler, heat water in the bottom until it boils. Reduce the heat. Add the top part and place the chocolate inside. Stir occasionally until the chocolate melts.
What is the difference between white chocolate and candy melts?
White chocolate isn't chocolate at all, but it is made with cocoa butter to give it better flavor than most candy melts. Candy melts do not contain any cocoa butter.
