Baked ham, egg noodles, cheese and green beans come together in this fun twist on a classic casserole recipe. Ham noodle casserole is a comforting dinner that your whole family is bound to love.

Ham Casserole with Noodles Ingredients
  • egg noodles – use the wide egg noodles. You can also use homemade noodles.
  • cooked ham – I used cooked ham steak, but you could use smoked ham or cooked spiral ham.
  • cream of chicken soup – I like to use a low-sodium soup from the grocery store, but you could also use homemade cream of chicken soup.
  • sour cream – used for creaminess
  • Colby and Cheddar cheese – I like to use a Colby and Cheddar cheese blend.
  • Green Beans – washed and cut.
  • Butter
  • seasonings – salt, black pepper, garlic powder, garlic salt, onion powder, thyme
  • bread crumbs – you can use plain or  bread crumbs with Italian seasoning.

Substitutions

  • You can sub other cooked vegetables for the green beans – asparagus, peas, carrots or spinach all work well.
  • Crushed crackers or French fried onions can be subbed for the breadcrumbs.

  1. Step 1:  Melt the butter in a skillet. Sauté onions and green beans in the pan over medium heat for 5 minutes. Set aside.

  1. Step 2: Preheat oven and prepare a baking dish.
    Cook egg noodles on the stove top over medium heat according to package directions. When pasta is al dente, drain and set aside. Add soup, sour cream, herbs and cheese to a mixing bowl.

Store leftovers in an airtight container. I like to use freezer-safe plastic bags, and then I have a meal that is ready to go,

Timesaving and Helpful Tips

  • Don’t skip sautéing the green beans and onions.
  • Preparation can be done in advance: cutting the ham into bite-sized pieces, grate the cheese, wash and cut the green beans, cut the onion.
  • You can use frozen cooked green beans in place of fresh.
  • You can use precut fresh green beans and you can use precut ham.
  • This is an easy dish to make ahead of time, just keep in the refrigerator for a day or freeze for later.

Yes, you can sub sausage, chicken or turkey in this casserole

Can I use other types of pasta?

Yes, you can sub other small pastas for the noodles. Shells and ziti noodles would work well.

  • 3 cups egg noodles, uncooked
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup green beans
  • 1/4 cup onions chopped
  • 2 cups ham cooked
  • 1 10 0z. can Cream of chicken soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 3/4 cup Cheddar Colby cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons bread crumbs

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees f, and grease a 9" x 13"baking dish with butter or cooking spray..
  • Cook egg noodles on the stove top according to package directions. When pasta is al dente, drain and set aside.
  • Meanwhile, melt the butter in a skillet. Sauté onions and green beans in the pan over medium heat for 5 minutes. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, mix together all remaining ingredients EXCEPT the bread crumbs.
  • Add the green beans and onions to the bowl.
  • Add cooked drained noodles to the mixture and blend.
  • Spread mixture evenly into prepared baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the top of the casserole with buttered bread crumbs.
  • Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until center is heated through.
