20 Minute Dollar Store Decor

Hello Friends! Even though the temperatures here have been in the mid-eighties, I am hereby declaring it fall in our home. It’s time to bring out the fall decorations and now that football is starting, it might as well be here already.

I am watching some football and putting together a dollar store fall wreath. I am using a tv tray for my craft table. Not ideal, but sometimes I can make it work for simpler crafts like this one.

Dollar Store Fall Decor Supplies

As you know, I love shopping at the dollar store for cheap organizing and decor ideas and I find it fun to challenge myself to make items using mostly dollar store items. I do not like to spend a lot of money on things that I only have out for a month or so each year.

Plus, I would rather spend the money on other things like travel. So let’s get started with this session of 20-minute dollar store decor. I am sharing 2 different wreath ideas today.

Wreath one – burlap ribbon and styrofoam ring.

So I gathered my items together and got busy.

Directions:

First I covered the styrofoam wreath with burlap strips of fabric.

Once I wrapped the burlap, I glued the end.  Then I cut all of the flowers so that only 1″ of stem is left.  I put these into the wreath in several places by pressing the flower into the styrofoam.

Then I added the scarecrow and the ribbon bow, using floral wire to secure.

Chalkboard Tags

Finally, I finished it off with a chalkboard gift tag. I found these tags in the dollar bins at Target.

Supplies:

  • 14” metal wreath form
  • 2 packages of decorative mesh (brown, orange and yellow patterned)
  • 1 package of ribbon tulle (gold with leaves)
  • 1 roll chevron ribbon (white with orange, green and red chevron stripes)
  • 1 roll orange burlap ribbon
  • 15 fuzzy sticks/chenille stems
  • 2 pack of scarecrow picks
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun loaded with glue

Directions:

Before you start, note that you will need a total of 30 bunches of ribbon/mesh/tulle. You will have roughly enough for 5 bunches on each of the 6 sections in the wreath form. You will make 6 bunches with 4 pieces, then the remaining 24 pieces with 3 bunches. If you are able to do more than 6 punches with 4 pieces, that’s fine!

  1. Cut all of your ribbon and mesh into 6 inch lengths.
  2. Cut each fuzzy stick/chenille stem in half.
  3. Roll each piece of mesh into a tighter tube.
  4. Roll each piece of the ribbon tulle diagonally.
  5. Gather 3-4 pieces of mush, ribbon, and/or tulle; laying each piece on top of the other, in a snowflake like pattern (see photo below) . Alternate between them all, to achieve them whimsical look of this wreath.
  6. Wrap a chenille stem around the bunch and twist 3 times.
  7. Repeat steps 5-6 until you have 30 bunches.
  8. Now it’s time to start attaching the bunches to the wreath. Lay the chenille stem over the inner two wires on the wreath and twist the stems together three times to secure.
  9. Repeat this step over the entire wreath, attaching 5 bunches to each of the 6 sections. You will want to pace them so that the different ribbons are somewhat evenly scattered throughout the wreath.
  10. Once all of the bunches are attached, you will fluff them out with your hands, until you get the look you desire.

  1. Today is the first day I maybe sorta need to wear socks and shoes instead of sandals. We’ll see. I think it’s safe to declare it as fall, though!
I’ll be heading to the dollar store today armed with your inspiration.

    1. Let me know what you find at yours Tamara – those stores are addicting. Glad to hear it is feeling like fall there. We are supposed to get some rain this week. 🙂

  2. I love your wreath – especially the cute little scarecrow. I will have to stop in the Dollar Store the next time I am out and see what fall crafting goodies our local store currently has.
