To a medium sauce pan, add 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water, and berries.
Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture begins to simmer.
Simmer for 10 minutes.
Remove from the heat and drain through a fine mesh strainer.
Allow the berry syrup to cool.
To a large pitcher, add 2 cups fresh squeezed lemon juice, the berry syrup (should equal about 1 1/2 cups), and the remaining sugar and water.
Stir well.
Move to the refrigerator to chill for about 2 hours.
Serve over ice, and garnish with fresh lemons or berries, if desired.
