Mardi Gras Muffalettas

An easy and tasty recipe for Muffaletta Sandwiches! A traditional Mardi Gras sandwich made from olives, peppers and spices. Perfect any time of year.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup pimiento-stuffed olives drained and chopped
  • 1 can 4-¼ ounces ripe olives, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • ½ teaspoon basil
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ pound hard salami thinly sliced
  • ¼ pound provolone cheese sliced
  • ¼ pound cotto salami thinly sliced
  • ¼ pound part-skim mozzarella cheese sliced
  • 1 loaf french bread

Instructions

  • In a bowl mix together both types of olives, both vinegars, olive oil, garlic, basil and oregano.
  • Remove the inside of the bottom half of the french bread and spread olive mixture over the bottom bread.
  • Then layer slices of salami, mozzarella cheese, salami and provolone cheese on the sandwich.
  • Top with bread top.
  • Cut sandwiches with a sharp serrated knife.

Notes

  • You can Prepare the olive salad ahead of time and even use it the next day. The olive salad is the heart of the muffaletta, so take your time with it
  • Feel free to experiment with other cured meats and cheeses based on your preferences.
  • Wrap and refrigerate. Tightly wrap the sandwich in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, ideally overnight. This allows the bread to soften and absorb the olive salad's juices, resulting in a perfectly balanced and flavorful bite.
