This post is brought to you by one of my favorite stores, Staples. My tips, stories and opinions are always my own.
My kids have gone through many backpacks throughout their school years. Some packs fared better than others. When they were younger, pack durability was not as big of an issue, but as they got older and carried more books, there were more things to consider.
Since many are heading back to school, I wanted to share what I have learned over the last 15 years of what I think is important to look for when shopping for a backpack for your student.
Durability
The backpack should be made with quality material. Kids tend to toss their backpacks around and some of the cheaper backpacks rip quite easily. When the kids were small, I used to buy the cheaper ones and they worked great when the kids were in preschool and kindergarten. By the time they got to high school and college, this was much more important.
Style
Backpack designs are so varied now. When kids were younger, they usually want their packs decorated with teams or animated characters. We went through many. As they get older, they wanted less decorated, but more functional backpacks. Now there are other alternatives to the traditional pack. A rolling backpack or a messenger pack might suit your child’s needs.
Comfort
The best backpacks would be light-weight but also durable enough to do the job. The straps should be padded and the material should not be uncomfortable in any way. The pack should sit in the middle of the back and should not be too overloaded.
Size
Ensure that the backpack fits your child. Straps should be adjustable and the backpack should not be too large. Weight should be distributed evenly. Does the backpack offer separate storage areas? If you child uses a tablet, you will want to ensure that there is a padded slot for it. When my kids were younger, many packs did not have a slot for a water bottle, because it was not that popular at the time, but now, that may be important for your child. Also, you will want to ensure that there are enough compartments for your student’s needs, with a balance of organizing contents without over packing it.
You can see a variety of backpacks available on-line at Staples here.
What do you look for in purchasing a backpack?

I am a grad student, and I love to travel. When searching for a backpack, I had to take those two things into consideration. I found a Swiss backpack at Staples a couple years ago, and was able to wait until they had a sale on them, but I had a coupon. I got a $120 backpack for almost 50% off! It was well worth it! I use Swiss brand from most of my baggage needs. They always have some kind of warranty on top of the store’s warranty. Can get to be pricey, but they guarantee all of their products. Love Swiss!!!
