Summertime can be a tough time to be productive. With the long summer days of warm and sunny skies and beckoning beaches, it can be tough to stay motivated to work at you goals. Of course it is important to take vacations and enjoy leisurely activities too. But sometimes it can be tough to get back into a routine when you return and keeping productive can be a challenge. I have a few tips to stay focused:
Based on your goals, make a list of what needs to be accomplished. I use a paper version for day-to-day tasks and the ToDoist app for more extensive tasks. Look at each task and make sure it really needs to be on your list.
We tend to focus on the easy tasks first, but really it can be very empowering to tackle the more difficult tasks first. I would much rather have an afternoon at the beach than have a mammogram or dentist appointment, but the truth is, health and wellness is a priority. I will have a better time at leisure activities once I have at least started the more daunting ones.
Sometimes we try to hit 10 12 things on our list and let’s face it, if we are travelling or planning a big event, we may have to, however, 4-5 things per day are more manageable and a lot less stressful. It is important to have downtime built into our agenda. Not just for rest, but for the unexpected issues and interruptions (some welcomed) that are inevitable.
When possible, delegate tasks to kids and family members. Helping others is a wonderful feeling – why deprive someone of this? Helping each other out is not only supporting the other person, it is good for the soul. This includes paying someone to help you accomplish what you need to do.
There is nothing like visualizing and imagining large projects as completed. By doing this, you step up your motivation and anticipation is a very strong and exhilarating emotion. The farther in advance that you can visualize your goals, the more powerful the motivation.
What do you do to stay motivated?
