My bathroom needs some serious attention in the makeover department. I have to say that it has been low on my priority list, but it is time for a medicine cabinet makeover.
I have been working on a few projects around the house this week and yesterday I updated my bathroom medicine cabinet. I have a mirrored metal cabinet that I love, but what I don't love is that the metal parts of the cabinet rust due to the moisture near the sink and from the bottles stored. You can see what I mean by this photo. I am only sharing this with you because we are friends - please do not judge.
Yuk! So I decided to update it and with the help of ehow, I started the process of repainting it and giving it a medicine cabinet makeover!
First, I emptied out the entire cabinet.
I found a couple of old, expired eye drops, allergy medicine and about 5 extra empty contact lens holders.
Next, I took out all the shelving and washed each piece thoroughly.
Medicine Cabinet Makeover
I was not about to attempt to pull out the entire medicine cabinet out of the wall since I did not want to make the project bigger than necessary, so I moved everything out of area and sanded down the metal shelf with sandpaper.
Next, I painted the metal shelf with semi-gloss white paint. Because I left the unit on the wall, I opened all the windows so that I would not be breathing paint fumes. I thought about lining the back of the cabinet with paper but decided that I would rather have the clean white look.
Once the paint dried, I put back the shelving components and put back all of my products in the cabinet.
They are not so cluttered now that I threw some old items out. Old medications should always be thrown out responsibly and not tossed into the toilet or trash. Check with your pharmacy if you are unsure of how to dispose.
I also attached a magnetic strip on the door so that I could corral my safety pins and bobby pins.
I love the look of my cabinet now!

Love the bobby pin idea. I saw it on Pinterest a while back and have been meaning to do that in my daughter's bathroom. Hopefully I will get to it soon!!

Have you been peeking into my 1977's medicine cabinet? Mine looks the same as yours did(before pic)
and I'm sitting here making myself a list of projects I need to tackle in 2014..We have looked for years to
find a medicine cabinet that would fit into same space to no avail. My suggestion is to paint the existing one like you did until we makeover the bathrooms. In the main bathroom that any visiting guest would use, I don't know why we can't buy a new cabinet and hang above the toilet, no mirrors, two doors. Have handyman cover the hole where the old medicine cabinet is not with wallboard, tape it, sand it and paint. Hang a pretty picture there. Problem solved for that bathroom.
Suggestion#2 have handyman make a repica of old medicine cabinet and hang between wall studs, eliminate mirror on medicine cabinet as there is large mirror over the vanity in each bathroom.
Suggestion#3 to myself: Quit procrastinating and just do it! Make the handyman a list of projects to accomplish

My medicine cabinet is old and looks just like your before! I have got to stop avoiding it and just jump right in and do it because your finished product looks fabulous!
