I recently had an opportunity to attend a complimentary tasting and lunch at the new Shop House Southeast Asian Kitchen in Hollywood. You all know how much I love Los Angeles and food, so of course I happily attended.
When I first walked into Shop House Kitchen, I noticed the chic and contemporary style of the restaurant.
I was quickly greeted by their cheerful staff members. They were so friendly and helpful. They gave me some background on how the restaurant came to be. I learned that this restaurant is owned by Chipotle which explains why the set up looked so familiar.
Shop House is a Southeast Asian restaurant that offers meat, vegetables and tofu dishes with Thai and Vietnamese influence. The first Shop House was opened in Washington D.C. in 2011 and this is only the second location in the United States.
What is unique about Shop House Kitchen is the items are fresh, flavorful and fast. The items are fresh and free of antiboitics, hormones or GMO’s. The food service is very similar to Chipotle. You pick your fixings as you move down the line and create your own meal in a matter of seconds (or minutes if someone is in front of you).
Basically, you are building a meal in bowl. You can start with jasmine rice, chilled rice noodles, brown rice or salad as a base and add meats, or tofu next. Then one can add vegetables like corn, green beans and eggplant and top it off with their Tamarind Vinaigrette, green curry or red curry sauce.
I got a chance to try sample sizes of nearly everything on the menu. Some of my favorites were the Grilled Chicken Satay (chicken marinated with herbs, spices and coconut milk), the Pork and Chicken Meatballs (mixed with rice and herbs), the Grilled Steak Laab (steak rubbed with chilis, lime and crispy rice), and their Green Beans (with caramelized shallots and red chili jam). They also serve ground tofu, but I am a meat eater, so personally, I enjoyed the meat selections.
After the tasting, I built my bowl with my favorites which included the pork and chicken meatballs on a bed of fresh brown rice. Then I topped them with the green beans, papaya slaw and the red curry sauce (spicy but good!). What a flavor-fest!
This tasted as good as it looks!
Bowls start at under $7.
The Shop House Kitchen I visited is located at:
6333 W Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90028
They are building two more kitchens in the Los Angeles area this year. One will be in Santa Monica and another in Westwood. Be sure to follow them on Twitter or Facebook, so you won’t miss when they are open.
