Mid Year Goals

The end of June not only signifies the end of Spring and the beginning of Summer, it is also the half-way point of the year.  This is a great time to revisit the goals I made for myself and back in January.

Mid Year Goals

I know that I, personally, am not where I want to be in terms of my financial and weight loss goals for the year.   New brakes on the car and some home repairs have impacted by budget and I have not been diligent enough to schedule visits to the gym regularly.   But, that is ok, because there are worse things that can happen and I am an optimist.

So today I am revising my goals for the second half of the year.  I  am also making some blogging goals that I did not make at the beginning of the year, because at that time my blog was only in my mind.  The birth of my blog is one of the goals I did meet and that came with so many other blessings.  I have met an amazing group of bloggers and have learned how to pin, tweet, post and make a Facebook page.  There is still so much to learn, but I am enjoying the experience.

I hope that the first half of the year has been good to you and wish you an even better second half.  What is the biggest goal you have for the second half of this year?

Thank you for stopping by!

DIY Mason Jars for the 4th

I wanted to make some centerpieces with the mason jars and other craft supplies I have on hand for the Fourth of July.  If you have seen my Pinterest boards, you know I love love love mason jars!  I could write an entire post on how fabulous they are, but I will save that for another time.   I especially like that they are so versatile for decorating.

I gathered these items from my craft supplies…(mason jar, glass stones, a small votive holder).

I wanted to create some height in the jar because I will be using tea lights, so I put in the smaller glass candle holder upside-down into the mason jar.

Then I layered the glass stones into the jar by color. Then I placed the tea light candle on top of the smaller candle holder.

I added a ribbon on the outside,

This is how it looks lit.

Celebrating the first weekend of Summer

Laguna1

This weekend we went to breakfast at a favorite spot in Laguna Beach, California.  The view of the ocean is so pretty and many times you can see dolphins splashing about.

C’est la Vie is a cute French restaurant that is of course,  also a bakery.

They have fresh bread in the front window.

and tasty pastries in the case inside…

There is dining inside and on the patio.  The food at this French cafe is very good  and the staff is very friendly.  It was a great way to celebrate the first weekend of summer at the beach.  I was not compensated for this post and the opinions are my own, I just wanted to share this adorable restaurant with you.

How do you celebrate the first official weekend of summer?

Repurposed Coffee Can

I have been saving empty coffee cans for a while and decided to turn them into storage jars.  The cans have lids which makes them great for food, spice or tea storage.   I emptied the cans of the remaining coffee and washed them out.

Then I measured out contact paper to cover the sides of the can and covered the sides.

Then I took some chalkboard labels I had and cut them in half.

Then I covered the cans.  This is how they came out.

Cranberry Chip Pecan Cookies

On some weekends when we have what seems like a million things going on, I will bake with a prepared sugar cookie mix to save some time.  With Father’s Day and my daughter’s graduation this weekend, I made these cookies using the following ingredients:

1 bag prepared sugar cookie mix

1 stick butter, softened

1 egg

1/2 C white chocolate chips

1/2 C dried cranberries

1/3 c chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and mix the cookie mix and butter and egg together in a bowl.  When combined well, add the chips, cranberries and pecans.

Bake for 9-11 minutes, until golden brown.  Cool on rack.

Simple Father’s Day Traditions

Father’s Day is a great time to start a tradition with your family.  In our family, the kids always made their Dad breakfast in bed.  When they were young, of course I made the food and they would be in the room when it was served.  As preschoolers and toddlers, they helped with getting the breakfast together.  As the kids became older, they wanted to participate more and cook more elaborate breakfasts.

I thought I would share some other ideas that can easily be traditions to incorporate into a celebration:

Make Breakfast for Dad

Have the kids help prepare if old enough or decorate a table setting for Dad.  In our family, we always did breakfast in bed for my husband.  We always took a picture of the breakfast and the kids.  We would decorate the tray with flowers and artwork.

Timeless Photo

Take a picture of the kids with a sign or photo of Dad or in a place that you will come back to in the future.  Why not just a photo? Because it is really special when you can take a picture in the same location at a time in the future and compare the changes in the scenery and the subjects.

Poetry or Prose

Have the kid(s) write a poem or letter to their Dad.  You can keep them all in a folder or binder and add as the years go by.  It’s fun later to compare writing and sentiments.  Younger kids may need prompts to get started.

Give A Speech

Take turns giving a 60 second thank you speech thanking Dad or Grandpa around the table before a meal.  Recall your a favorite moment or memory that you appreciate.  In this busy world, I know that sometimes we do not get the chance to verbally thank someone we care about enough in person.  If you cannot be with your father or Grandfather, then videotape the message and send it.

I encourage you to create any fun tradition and make it your family’s own.  Whether it is going on a picnic, playing cards or bingo or participating in a family gathering, I think that creating a tradition helps a family develop a sense of unity and connection.   In this busy world, it is something simple and constant that can strengthening family bonds.

Whether you are a parent or not, I hope you enjoy celebrating with your family.  I’m off to buy breakfast ingredients.  Does your family have a Father’s Day tradition?

Cleaning Up Mom’s Patio

Mom's patio afater #2

If you have been following my blog, you know that my parents are up in years and are having trouble keeping things organized (read understatement).  This weekend we cleaned up their patio area that had been neglected.  To give you an idea of what we did, I have to share with you the before pictures:

My parents met in the late 1930′s and had been children during the depression.  At that time in our country, people saved everything that they could get their hands on.  Women could not even buy nylon stockings because their components were used for the war effort.  So my parents have become a bit like hoarders.   I don’t know if you can make it out, but there are 3 weed wackers in the photo.  My parents do not have a big yard and Dad has not used a weed wacker in months.

As we went through all the items in their patio, we grouped them by the following:

  • Good condition – save or donate if not needed or a spare
  • Fair condition – restore and reuse or donate
  • Bad Condition – not really usable, not restorable, dispose
  • Trash – dispose

Of course my parents did not want to part with anything tht was usable, so we cleaned the items up and replaced them.  We also talked to them about the need to purge and simplify.  We had 7 bags of trash and a couple of large items for the trash.  This is how it looked after:

So that was our weekend project.  What spring cleaning are you doing?
